No more twist, lick, dunk

got milk? got melamine?

My youngest sibling Gavin used to ask me to buy him pasalubong when I get the chance to come home on weekends.

Not to break his young, hopeful heart, I always make sure that I have a packet of biscuits, some candies or chocolates for him. These small treats serve as his rewards for behaving well in school or getting high scores in his exams. I remember, he'll battle with his sleepiness and stay awake no matter what time I arrive just so he'll be the first one to open my bag and get his most awaited prize. Besides him enjoying his prizes, I make sure that he gets educated on which food to eat, that he chooses healthy food.

But recently, news on the produced/processed milk from mainland China that contain melamine made me think hard whether I was effective in teaching Gavin choose the right food. I have received several e-mails of lists of products which have been pulled out from the market because of the milk scandal across Asia. Unfortunately, some of them are the ones I have bought for my brother. Sometimes, even for my other siblings and parents.

It's frustrating to find out that what I thought were good for him were actually a total waste of money. And our preferred brand of powdered milk is in the list, which me and my siblings have been drinking since the Chernobyl accident happened.

Because Gavin is going to school six days a week, I've always asked Mom to make sure he takes his vitamins regularly. I've been thinking for sometime if I should have persisted in asking him to drink a glass of milk like he used to. But with the news, I'm glad I didn't.

Have you checked the partial list that BFAD has released of dairy products which have been pulled out from the market? Which products are common in your household?
